Hello Newgrounds!

Posted by greyheaven - January 1st, 2009

Hello Newgrounds!
My name is Ben, I'm an Illustrator and I live in England.
I have been surfing Newgrounds for years, but now I am joining in the party! My new years resolution is to try to learn to animate, something I have wanted to do with my work for too long now!

I will post a picture up here, and a bunch more in the Art forum - any total beginners advice on animating in a similar style would be appreciated!

Ben

Hello Newgrounds!

Do a couple of tests before you get stated, like walking and whatever ells you plan to animate. Don't just do one and say 'That's good enough' do a couple :3

I assume you already have an animating program but if you don't you should download a free trial of Flash CS4 <a href="https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?promoid=EBYEX&product=flash&loc=en">https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/in dex.cfm?promoid=EBYEX&product=fla sh&loc=en</a>

Personally (Like a lot of people) I prefer flash 8 because it has less error's but I don't like the fact you can't upgrade the action script to version 3, but that's up to you. You might need to join adobe to get a free trial and have a feel for it to see if you want it.

If you decide to get it then buy the serial code from the website or buy a disc from a shop (or ask a someone for a free serial code).

I'd love to see your type of art in an animation and/or a game in future submissions. You chose a great new years resolution. You might even want to look around adobe for tutorials or Google for some if you can find any. Youtube's another alternative.

I think you've covered art and style. I say good luck to you :3

Thanks very much Nuttro!
This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for - I have an old version of Flash (It's 2004 - I think that's 8?) but I will give the trial version of CS4 a shot!

Thanks again for taking the time to post this!

~ Ben

No problem :3

2004 should be 'Flash MX 04', in other words it's 'Flash 7'. In order there are:
Future Splash Animator
Macromedia Flash 1
Macromedia Flash 2
Macromedia Flash 3
Macromedia Flash 4
Macromedia Flash 5
Macromedia Flash MX
Macromedia Flash MX 2004
Macromedia Flash 8
Adobe Flash CS3
Adobe Flash CS4

CS4 has made animating easier than previous versions. Here's a page of it's cool new features <a href="http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/features/?view=topnew">http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/f eatures/?view=topnew</a>
Just click on a picture and a video should prop up on the screen showing you a demonstration of what it does/can do.

Just thought you might like some more info on Flash.

Excellent again! Thanks so much!

I like your pictures.

Thanks! :)

Look's great, looking forward to it :P good luck!

Thanks :)

WOW! That art is so cool!

It's like a combination of old-england theme but with the combination of japanese sumi brush.

Thanks Jak! Glad you like it!

A year and still no animations! :( It'd be really awesome to see how well you can animate. Your art is quite detailed with all the little lines and everything and you probably wont be able to achieve that level of detail on flash without it being extremely time consuming and tedious.
I suggest you get used to the flash brush tool and how flash smooths first then start by animating just simple minimal characters.
If you need any help or have any WIP's that you want some feedback on please pm me :D I really admire you and your art and look forward to seeing more of it. You should visit the art portal more often??

Hi CloudEater!
A year already, it has gone so fast! Unfortunately work has gotten in the way of me progressing as I'd have liked with animation, it is something which I am still very keen to pursue though, I will hopefully have something to show...this year!
Thanks for stopping by!
